Unlocking a Vodafone 3G Data card on a PowerBook
Background
I was given a free Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS Data card with a PAYG USIM but I wanted to use it with my Orange contract USIM.
I started writing this thinking that unlocking the card would be quite a long involved process but it turns out it's a simple case of swapping the sim card and changing software.
It's not really unlocking
The Vodafone 3G Data cards are just re-branded Option GlobeTrotter 3G Quad cards that aren't actually locked to a specific provider. All provider locking is done in the software. Unfortunately Vodafone supply a branded version of the NovaMedia Highspeed 3G drivers for MacOS that check for a Vodafone USIM card before running.
Getting new software
You could go out and purchase the unbranded NovaMedia (http://www.novamedia.de/index_e.html) drivers for €75 or you could download the free drivers provided by James Grinter here (http://www.gbnet.net/~jrg/voda3g/) and change the settings to match those of your own network provider (most of which can be obtained here (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html)).
It really is that simple, I've used it successfully on both the new and old style Vodafone Mobile Connect branded Option cards and my Orange 3G USIM.
